Summer 2020 | High School Journal Club

This virtual journal club will introduce high school students to the scientific method, the peer-review process and the critical analysis of scholarly research articles. Students will work in small groups with science mentors (UCI neuroscience PhD students, undergraduate students and postdoctoral fellows) to learn how to read and critically analyze primary research articles in the neuroscience of learning and memory. Students will also have the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with their mentors during weekly Q+A sessions where they will learn about life as a scientist, STEM career options and more. Students will earn a certificate after successful completion of the program.

This program is an outreach program of the Center for the Neurobiology of Learning and Memory and is possible thanks to student volunteers from the CNLM Ambassador Program, Neuroscholar Program, and NuRhoPsi.

Hi beautiful people! I'm Danielle, a 4th year UCI Biological Sciences major whose currently aspiring to be a Physician Assistant - fingers crossed. Music and movies are my jam; they help me relax and mentally escape, so if you have any recommendations, please share. This is my first time as a scientific literature mentor and I'm very eager to meet and work with you all. Scientific papers usually appear daunting and challenging at first, but rest assured we will finish strong together! Hi! I'm Keiland Cooper, a PhD student studying how the brain learns and stores memories. Think about your favorite trip; all the sites, sounds, and even smells that come to mind? How is it that your brain can do that? Even though you can, our best artificial intelligence still struggles to do the same, and so I also work on making artificial intelligence learn and remember more like people. When I'm not in the lab, you can find me in the mountains on a snowboard, or with a guitar in hand.

I am a graduate student at UCI studying how drugs of abuse can change the brain. In addition, I am interested to find out the molecular basis behind what makes one vulnerable to drug addiction. I am applying a variety of techniques ranging from molecular approaches to in-vivo imaging to address these questions. I am also using these approaches to investigate circuit-based questions related to neurodegenerative diseases. Outside of the lab, I enjoy good shows, a great cup of coffee and taking my dog on long walks.

I am a fifth year graduate student at UCI, and my research is focused on identifying how injuries like a concussion or a stroke might trigger Alzheimer's disease. This means that a major focus of my work is understanding how the brain changes as it ages! Hi everyone! My name is Rachon and I just graduated UCI with a degree in Human Biology. I’ve always been interested in teaching and neuroscience, and my research interests are in memory, decision making and neurodegenerative diseases. I enjoy good music, good books, good food, good movies - and great coffee. I’m looking forward to discussing research papers with you, and my virtual door is always open for any advice or questions you might have on anything related to research/college/life!

I'm a PhD student at UCI studying the molecular basis for learning and memory with a special emphasis on synaptic transmission and the manipulation thereof. I have a background in ER nursing and build stuff in my "spare" time, from Legos and models to computers and houses; I also enjoy gardening, fencing, motorcycling, and gaming of all types. I love teaching, and am very much looking forward to this chance to pour fuel on the fire of scientific curiosity!
