Camp Info

Communication skills are critical when it comes to applying for college, getting internships and networking. Students need to be able to articulate their ideas and goals. For students who are thinking about entering the scientific field, scientific communication skills are vital. 

Communication Camp is a summer program for middle and high school students that offers an opportunity for an immersion in public speaking, interpersonal communication techniques, and interview skills. The 1-week full-day program will focus on interactive activities where students have the opportunity to actively practice various techniques. Students will learn from Bri McWhorter, MFA who specializes in teaching courses and workshops on communication to college students from around the country. 

Public Speaking 

    • Overcoming nerves
    • Commanding a room
    • Using your voice effectively 
    • Creating and organizing content in a presentation

Interpersonal Communication:

    • Connecting with others
    • Practicing active listening skills
    • Learning effective verbal and nonverbal communication

Interview Skills:

    • Entering a room relaxed and confident
    • Crafting and delivering compelling answers to questions
    • Practicing how to tell stories that showcase your talents

Communication skills are critical for success. Students will leave this program with a short TED-style talk that they can showcase after the program.

Fee

$375 - Includes all materials.
Participants are responsible for transportation and housing. The program does not provide housing.

We have a limited number of spaces available for the 2019 Communications Camp. Early registration is encouraged.

About the Instructor

Bri McWhorter is the founder and CEO of Activate to Captivate where she teaches communication skills from an actor’s point of view. For years, she has been teaching undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty at UC Irvine. This is the first time she is opening up her public speaking program, WAVE®, to middle and high school students. Bri has coached award-winning speakers at universities, nonprofits, and corporations. Clients include UC Santa Barbara, UC Santa Cruz, UC San Francisco, UC Davis, Edwards Lifesciences, DaVita Kidney Care, Cisco, and BrightFocus Foundation.
