Spotlights on Schneiderman Fellows
We would like to introduce you to the 2022/2023 Fellows of the Howard Schneiderman Training Program in Learning and Memory and celebrate the accomplishments of all of our current and past Fellows. This year, the program will fund 5 doctoral students whose work spans a wide range of approaches and techniques.
Meet Vini Duarte, UCI CNLM Howard Schneiderman Training Program Fellow
Vini Duarte is a 4th year PhD Candidate training under the mentorship of Dr. Katherine Thompson-Peer to understand how neurons use calcium to detect and respond to dendrite injury. Vini is currently in his second year as a Schneiderman Fellow. Watch the spotlight to learn more about Vini!
Meet Bianca Leonard, UCI CNLM Howard Schneiderman Training Program in Learning and Memory Fellow
Bianca Leonard is a 2nd year PhD student in the Medical Scientists Training Program training under the mentorship of Dr. Mike Yassa. Bianca's research aims to understand the influence of pre- and post-natal conditions on neurodevelopment with a particular focus on the impact that marginalization and adversity can have on our communities. Watch the spotlight below to learn more about Bianca!
Meet Kate Lawson, UCI CNLM Howard Schneiderman Training Program Fellow
Kate Lawson is a 3rd year PhD student training under the mentorship of Dr. Steve Mahler to understand how drugs of abuse and neural manipulations make animals feel. We visited the Mahler Lab to see what they've been up to. Check out what we learned!
Meet Nellie Nelson, UCI CNLM Howard Schneiderman Training Program in Learning and Memory Fellow
Nellie Nelson is a 4th year PhD student training under the mentorship of Dr. Autumn Ivy to explore exercise-induced epigenetic mechanisms and their potential role in reversing hippocampal memory impairments observed after early life adversity. Check out Nellie's spotlight below to learn more about her!
Meet Ali Ozgur, UCI CNLM Howard Schneiderman Training Program in Learning and Memory Fellow
Ali Ozgur is a 4th year PhD student training under the mentorship of Dr. Gyuri Lur. Ali's work aims to understand the neural underpinnings of decision making by following the activity of neurons throughout the learning process to see how they change. We visited the Lur lab to learn more. Check it out!
The Howard Schneiderman Training Program in Learning and Memory at the Center for the Neurobiology of Learning and Memory is a NIMH funded T32 predoctoral training program that is supplemented with a private endowment named in honor of Dr. Howard Schneiderman (1927-1990), former Dean of Biological Sciences at UC Irvine and a major driving force in building the School in its early days. The training program is directed by Drs. Michael Yassa and Bruce McNaughton.
